Why Spinach is The World’s Healthiest Food and Why You Should Be Eating More Often
If we think of spinach we think of the cartoon character Popeye. He was super strong, old Popeye the Sailor Man, from eating his spinach. Popeye has also lived on through the generations so perhaps it was the spinach that gave him these extraordinary health qualities and the ability to live forever!
Spinach is a really good vegetable. It is also a delicious vegetable that can be eaten raw in salads, cooked as a side dish or veggie, and as a meal on its own such as a spinach pie or quiche. There is baby spinach as well as ordinary spinach, and Chard, which is a form of spinach in a different color, as is Kale.
What is it about spinach that is beneficial?
Spinach is nourishing. It is filled with Vitamin C. It is a dark leafy vegetable which means it is also full of fiber. Spinach leaves just look good as well. They have such a beautiful colour, a dark bright green, they are super appealing to the eye and just waiting to be eaten!
Many people are into juicing these days especially green juice. Green juice is filled with all the vitamins and minerals needed for healthy living, as it is made up of all the green vegetables. Spinach, lettuce, cucumber and so on. Kale too.
Spinach has numerous health benefits. It has anti-inflammatory properties, anti-oxidant properties, bone health support and is a natural immune booster. Spinach is a good source of Vitamin K, Vitamin A, manganese, folate, iron, Vitamin B2, Vitamin B6, copper, Vitamin E, calcium, Vitamin C and potassium.
Mostly importantly, spinach has a good source of dietary fibre as well as phosphorous and Vitamin B1, zinc, choline and protein. We could go on and on and we will. Spinach also has omega-3 fatty acids, niacin, selenium and pantothenic acid.
It also has tons of flavonoids and carotenoids and it is hard to find a better source of lutein and zeazanthin.
This all sounds very complicated, all these fabulous nutrients with fancy names. The truth is – spinach is healthy, it is delicious to eat, it is inexpensive to buy from a store, it is super easy to grow on your own and you can never get bored with spinach. There is baby spinach, big spinach, green spinach, red spinach, swiss chard, chard and kale.
Our favorite spinach recipe
Spinach phyllo pie
-Spinach, one bag or one whole spinach
-One punnet Mushrooms
-Large Handful Mozzarella cheese
Clean your spinach and then wilt in in a pan over medium heat. Do not overcook it. In a separate pan, fry your chopped onion until they are golden brown and add the chopped mushrooms. Fry until well cooked, add the spinach, mix well together and add some salt and pepper for taste.
Crack your eggs, mix with a fork and mix in well with the above mixture. Add the mozzarella cheese too.
You will have melted some butter. You need to then layer your phyllo pastry on the bottom of a pie dish. Butter, phyllo, butter, phyllo, butter. Do three layers at the bottom of the dish. Pour in your spinach mixture and then do three more layers of phyllo. Phyllo, butter, phyllo.
Make a hole in the middle, place it in the oven and cook for about 20 minutes or until the phyllo is golden.
This recipe is delicious. Make very sure not to overcook the spinach, just wilt it gently. It will continue cooking when it is in the pie.
Spinach and illness
Recent studies have also been done on the relationship between cancer and vegetables such as cauliflower, broccoli, cabbage, brussel sprouts, turnips, kale and spinach. These are all vegetables high in fibre. Oddly, it was spinach that showed evidence of protection against prostate cancer.
Spinach and green juice
Spinach can boost your immune system which also means you can prevent disease. Have a bit of spinach a day and definitely make a green juice as often as you can. The beauty of green juice is that it acts as a cleanser, an immune booster, a natural weight loss supplement and an anti-inflammatory. Green juice is purely green vegetables. You do not have to worry about equal amounts of anything – you just throw in your various green vegetables and blend. You can try and make it a bit more tasty with a bit of cinnamon or nutmeg, or perhaps a slice of lemon too, but otherwise make it, drink it and feel the benefits. Make one daily. Why not!
